General guidelines for all schools

  • The Scientific Programme should focus on a broad, topical issue in Neuroscience.
  • The programme must include subjects of general interest such as current European legislation on animals in research, grant writing, communication skills, and ethics in scientific research. To help the scientific organiser in this task, the FENS-IBRO European Neuroscience Schools Programme has created an Applcation Advisory Team, as well as a Advisory Panel on ethics and communicating neuroscience that is formed by experts to be eventually invited to give lectures at the school. Scientific directors of the schools can also contact the Chair of the FENS Committee on Animals in Research (CARE) to get advice on the selection of the expert more appropriate for each school. Proposals for schools from young scientists are encouraged.
  • The initial application should contain the scientific programme in full and a proposed faculty, 70% of whom should be confirmed. The committee may request changes to the programme, and the final approval of a proposal is granted only after these changes have been made. The faculty should be experienced and dedicated teachers who agree to spend at least one entire week with the students. Geographic and gender balance must be taken into account in the selection of faculty and students.
  • The daily schedule of school activities should promote student discussion of the material presented at the lectures and laboratory demonstrations. Students are requested to submit an abstract of their own work. Poster sessions are the preferred format for presentations by the students since they facilitate informal interactions between faculty and students, however the scientific organizer/s can also decide to adopt slide presentations for this activity.
  • Schools should be at least 5 days in length, to allow sufficient time to create a congenial atmosphere for maximum social and scientific interactions between faculty and students. For the Summer and Winter Schools a maximum of 15 faculty members is suggested.
  • In advance of the school, a reading list, Power Point slides, mentoring offers and guidance aimed at improving student readiness should be made available on the schools' server.
  • The description of facilities must include lecture rooms, space for poster sessions and small group discussions as well as laboratory facilities if required by the course. Common housing and dining facilities and recreational activities should facilitate interactions between students and faculty.
  • The budget: An outline of expenditure must be provided with the application. The FENS-IBRO European Neuroscience Schools Programme will award substantial funding to approved schools and courses. However, the overall needs of science training in Europe and the limited resources currently available to the programme require that local and regional organisations as well as other interested sectors in government and industry also help support and expand the programme. Organisers are therefore encouraged to seek, as much as possible, additional resources. The additional contributions to the school should be included in the application and will be acknowledged on the web site and other publications.
  • Selection of students is the responsibility of the School organisers, acting in accordance with the guidelines. The final selection of the students should be approved by the liaisons officer for the school nominated by the committee. The participation of students from Central and Eastern Europe in Schools in Western Europe and vice versa should be encouraged as well as the participation of students coming from less favoured regions of the world.
  • For all announcements, the sponsorship of FENS and IBRO must be indicated prominently.
  • Schools and courses will be published by the FENS-IBRO and IBRO web sites, by e-mail and by posters.
