PhD fellowships in Neuroscience are available in the lab of Associate Professor Koen Vervaeke ( The positions are funded for a period of 3 years and can be extended. The starting date is flexible but preferably between July-October 2018.

We are searching for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in cortical circuits. We currently have two research programs; One aiming at unraveling the functions of retrosplenial cortex, and the other one focused on the somatosensory cortex. We aim at determining cortical circuit functions in trained mice and study the contribution of specific neuron types. The candidate will use in-vivo two-photon imaging and electrophysiology techniques to record neuronal activity, and use optogenetics to identify cell-specific contributions to cortex function.

Students with a degree in neuroscience, biology, medicine, computer science, physics or engineering are encouraged to apply. Ideally, the applicants have basic experience with some of the following disciplines; Electrophysiology, microscopy, optogenetics or computational neuroscience. The candidates should be handy and be comfortable to work with rodents.

We strongly emphasize good programming skills (eg. Matlab/Python/LabVIEW), critical and logical thinking, being a team player and contribute to an optimistic lab atmosphere. The candidate should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations. Applicants must hold an MSc or M.D. degree or be close to obtaining these.
