A PhD studentship in Neuroscience is available in the laboratory of Associate Professor Petra Scholze at the Center for Brain Research, Medical University of Vienna. The position is funded for a period of 3 years and paid according to the salary category for doctoral candidates of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) (

The candidate must be highly motivated and have a strong interest in neuroscience.
The planned project will study the function of human polymorphisms in nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) genes in nicotine addiction and schizophrenia. The candidate will work on human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPS) expressing polymorphisms of the nAChR α5- and α7-genes. These cells will be differentiated into glutamatergic, GABAergic, and dopaminergic neurons. Upon differentiation, these cells will be subject to detailed examination by single cell qRT-PCR, Fura2 calcium imaging and patch clamp electrophysiology.
Students with a degree in neuroscience, biology, medicine, or similar are encouraged to apply (MSc or MD degree). Ideally, the applicant has basic experience with some of the following methods: electrophysiology, molecular biology, cell culture and/or viral vector-mediated gene modification. Excellent English language skills, critical thinking, flexibility, strong work ethic, and ability to work both independently and in constructive groups are mandatory.
