Description

Caesar is a Neuroscience research institute associated with the Max Planck Society and is located in Bonn, Germany. Caesar’s research is interdisciplinary with scientists from various research areas working together on the topics of cellular signal processing and the neural foundations of behavior. This ranges from studying the behavior of single-cell organisms to studying one of the key questions of neuroscience: how does neuronal activity give rise to complex and goal-directed behavior?

The Max Planck Research Group led by Dr. J. D. Seelig is offering 2 Ph.D. positions in photonics / microscopy for neuroscience.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist interested in developing optical methods for studying the brain.
Project descriptions:
- One project is available for developing adaptive optical microscopy methods for improving the imaging depth into tissue with the goal of noninvasively monitoring neural networks deep in the brain. These methods will be combined with other beam shaping techniques for improving the image resolution and imaging rate.
- One project focuses on the use of nanoparticles for controlling and monitoring neural activity (action potentials) in the brain. You will use optical microscopy as well as electron microscopy methods for testing the optical properties of nanoparticles under the application of electric fields with the goal of using them as sensors in brain. The in-depth characterization of these nanoparticles can also be combined with super-resolution microscopy methods.
- You will interact with scientists from different fields such as neuroscience, computational neuroscience or machine learning.
