Description

An MSc/PhD position is available in Fall 2018/Winter 2019 in the Department of Physiology at the University of Alberta (Canada). The research project aims to uncover the contribution of respiratory central pattern generators to ventilation across sleep states in health and sleep disordered breathing models. We use in vivo electrophysiology, pharmacology, optogenetics and chemogenetics to manipulate functions of brainstem neurons involved in neural control of respiration.
Candidate should have a strong background in neurophysiology and neuroscience, be highly motivated and with good interpersonal and communication skills. Applicants with previous experience in rodent stereotaxic surgeries, optogenetics, EEG and EMG recordings, and imaging will have priority in the selection.
The selected candidate will work in the laboratory directed by Dr. Silvia Pagliardini . The PhD student will also benefit from the expertise of a strong respiratory and motor control group present at the University of Alberta.
Applications should include a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, a copy of undergraduate transcripts, two contact references and a short summary of past research experience. For international students, proof of English proficiency is required at the time of application (IELTS ≥6.5; TOEFL ≥88; https://www.ualberta.ca/graduate-studies/prospective-students/international-admissions-protocol/english-language-proficiency).
