Description

A PhD fellowship in Neuroscience is available starting December 2018 at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo. The student will be supervised by Anna Chambers (https://www.med.uio.no/imb/english/people/aca/annacham/), and co-supervised by Assoc. Prof. Koen Vervaeke (www.vervaeke-lab.org). The position is funded for a period of 3 years, and can be extended.

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in systems neuroscience. Our group aims to understand information processing in brain structures relevant for learning and memory. To this end, we investigate how specific cell types originating in the hippocampus and neocortex are influenced by a variety of inputs, and how they influence the activity of their target cells across various brain states and behavioral contexts. To carry out this functional circuit dissection in rodents, we employ chronic, in-vivo two-photon microscopy of identified cell types using recently developed viral-genetic tools. Imaging and electrophysiology is performed in conjunction with optogenetic manipulation of circuit activity during behavior.

Students with a degree in neuroscience, biology, medicine, computer science, physics or engineering are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have experience with at least one of the following disciplines: systems neurophysiology (e.g. multiphoton microscopy, electrophysiology, optogenetics), animal behavior, or systems/quantitative biology. Programming experience, particularly in Matlab, Python, or LabVIEW, is an important advantage.

Applicants must hold, or be close to obtaining, an MSc or M.D. degree. A strong command of both written and spoken English is required.

To apply, please sent your motivation letter and CV addressed to Dr. Anna Chambers (anna.chambers@medisin.uio.no).

We offer:
• Salary level NOK 432 700 – 489 300 (~45.000 - 51.000 euros) per year.
• Attractive pension and welfare benefits
