We are inviting applications for highly motivated new PhD students in the laboratory of Dr. Beirowski ( at the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute in Buffalo, Western New York. The Beirowski lab focuses on how glial metabolism regulates axon integrity and myelination (e.g. Beirowski, 2013, Front Cell Neurosci, 7; Beirowski et al., 2014, Nature Neuroscience 17(10); Beirowski et al., 2017, PNAS 114(21)). We are also interested in the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of axon degeneration. Potential projects encompass the development and mechanistic characterization of novel mutant animal models showing compromised axon integrity in the nervous system secondary to glial abnormalities. Successful candidates are given the opportunity to extend their research interest through collaborations with other groups in the USA.

Methods: Molecular genetics, generation of transgenic mice, diverse biochemical methods such as western blotting and enzyme assays, primary cell culture of neurons and glia, CRISPR/CAS9 genome editing, immunofluorescence, histology, electron microscopy, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy, image analysis, behavioral analysis

Applicants must hold an academic university degree (M.Sc.) or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Interested candidates should send their inquiries or applications (cover letter including a brief statement of research interests, CV, publication list, as well as names and contact details of 2 referees) directly to Dr. Beirowski (

The Hunter James Kelly Research Institute ( is housed in the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences ( on the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus adjacent to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Hauptman-Woodward Institute, all excellent research facilities with state of the art equipment.
