The Institute of Physiology at RWTH Aachen University has an opening for a

PhD student (m/f) in the field of Ion Channel Research

This is a part-time position (65%). The salary corresponds to level 13 TV-L. The start date for the position is 1.12.2018, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree.

The project
Modulation of neuronal signaling by binding of endogenous peptides to ionotropic receptors and ion channels is a highly relevant physiological process. Yet to date, its molecular mechanism is not understood. This DFG-funded project focuses on identifying the binding sites of known neuropeptide ligands on different but related ion channels. Using state of the art chemical biology and various electrophysiological techniques, mainly two-electrode voltage clamp, you will functionally characterize specifically mutated ion channels and mutated peptide ligands to understand the molecular basis of their interaction. You will be part of a highly motivated, multi-disciplinary, international team working on this project.

Your profile

• You have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry or any related subject
• You have a strong interest in ion channel research and in molecular mechanisms of neuronal processes
• You have practical experience in basic lab techniques, e.g. molecular biology. Experience in electrophysiology, ideally with two-electrode voltage clamp, will be appreciated.
• You are highly motivated, engaged and excited to work alongside an international team
• You are proficient in spoken and written English

RWTH Aachen University is certified as a family-friendly University. We particularly welcome and encourage applications from women, disabled persons and ethnic minority groups, recognizing they are underrepresented across RWTH Aachen University. The principles of fair and open competition apply and appointments will be made on merit.
