The research group of the Institute of Pathophysiology, University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, is looking for a PhD student. The 'Neurogelotology' laboratory investigates the neuronal basis of fun associated with ticklish laughter in rats (Ishiyama & Brecht, 2016 Science). The project aims to understand how tickle stimuli are converted into fun emotional processing in the brain. The tasks of the student include the following: building and maintaining a setup; handling and tickling rats; stereotaxic surgery; in vivo freely moving electrophysiological recording; microinjection; immunohistochemistry; optogenetic stimulation; spike, video and vocalization analysis; developing custom software.

Applicants should have or be expected to complete a Master degree in neuroscience or related fields. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with a high level of organizational skills, analytical skills, communication skills, patience and creativity. Previous experience with in vivo electrophysiology, histochemistry, viral tracing, handling rats, spike sorting or behavioral quantification is not required but an advantage. Programming skills in MATLAB, Python and MySQL are also plus.

The position is available after July 2019 for up to 4 years. Employment, payment and social benefits are determined by the Public Sector Collective Agreement (TV-L E13 65%). Students with third party-funded scholarship are appreciated.
