The DFG-funded Research Training Group 1885 Molecular Basis of Sensory Biology at the Carl von Ossietzky University welcomes applications for 13 PhD positions (Start: 01.10.2019; 65% E13 TVL; 3 years).

The Research Training Group is aiming to investigate the biology of sensory cells at the molecular level. The research projects have a strong interdisciplinary character involving both project leaders and students from biology, chemistry and physics. Projects will target fundamental problems in research fields dealing with vision, hearing, magnetoreception, olfaction and bacterial chemoreception. The central topics of all projects will be directed towards unravelling the operational principles of sensory systems and towards understanding the common molecular and physical principles realized in sensory systems. Topics and details of the single projects can be viewed on the website (

The program is looking for highly motivated and talented candidates, having an academic university degree (Master- or equivalent) in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or related subjects.
You will become part of a large diverse team and will have access to a very wide range of superb modern equipment, techniques and expertise. You will join our graduate school offering soft skill and scientific skill courses as well as support with career development. The RTG is aware of the power of diversity. Female candidates with equal qualification will be given preference. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification.
