A PhD position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Frederic Bretzner. The current project aims to investigate the neuronal populations of the mesencephalic locomotor region and their interactions with reticulospinal subpopulations to locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury. Using transgenic or mutant mice, the student will examine the intrinsic and synaptic properties of these neurons, their topography, their synaptic connectivity to the neural circuit, and their functional contribution to motor control and locomotor recovery after neurotraumatic injury of the spinal cord.

Our Plasticity and Development of Motor Control laboratory is located in the Neurosciences axis of the research center of the CHU de Québec, which is affiliated with the Université Laval. In order to study motor control and functional recovery after neurotraumatic injury or neurodegenerative lesion, our laboratory uses a combination of neuroscience techniques, including optical (calcium imaging and optogenetic tools), neuroanatomical (cell and axonal tract tracing, epifluorescent and confocal microscopy), and neurophysiological (patch-clamp recordings on brain slices, as well as electromyographic and neuronal recordings in freely behaving mice) techniques.

The candidate should have a good background in neuroscience (Bachelor or Master). Experience in Matlab research and programming welcome.
