Topic: Seizuring and cognitive long-term effects of an ineffective first-line antiepileptic treatment on subsequent treatment efficacy in a mouse model of childhood absence epilepsy

Background
Is the initial anti-epileptic treatment able to determine the long term cognitive development in a mouse model of absence epilepsy, is it also a determinant for the prognosis of the epilepsy itself?
In humans, aggravation of epileptic syndromes with some anti-epileptic drugs is a well-known phenomenon. This is often the case for childhood epilepsies such as absence epilepsy when GABAergic drugs are used. We have recently shown that exposure to this treatment which worsens the epileptic syndrome may have long term consequences, including the lack of efficacy of a second drug treatment (Pawluski et al 2018), and if it may have any consequences on cognitive development in infancy or childhood. The implication of first anti-epileptic drug (AED) choice on the long term seizure outcome in childhood absence epilepsy seems to be correlated in a recent study (Berg et al., 2014).

Rationale, objectives, data, methods
The aim of this study is to expand our previous work (Pawluski et al 2018) by investigating how an inappropriate first AED may impact on the long-term efficacy of a second appropriate AED on EEG activity and behavioral outcomes in male and female mice.

Candidate profile, tasks and skills
The research project is at the interface between behavioral science and neuroscience - including experimental epileptology. Therefore, the background of the post-doc candidate will preferably be in a behavioral neuroscience field. Background/skills in electrophysiology and/or brain development will be an asset. The post-doc candidate will be primarily supervised by Dr Benoît Martin, PhD and Dr. Jodi Pawluski, PhD, in collaboration with Dr Arnaud Biraben, MD.

Hiring period and type of contract: The position is available immediately. The contract is for one year with a possible extension.
