We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our effort to understand the mechanism of degeneration in Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The main focus of our laboratory is in the mechanistic and therapeutic aspects of neurodegenerative diseases (Ref. Ruegsegger et al., Acta NP 2016, Filezac de L’Etang et al., Nature Neurosci 2015 and Saxena et al., Neuron 2013). Our multidisciplinary approach uses transgenic disease models and combines state-of-the-art small cell number proteomics, transcriptomics, calcium imaging, neuronal tracing, chemogenetics and behavior paradigms.

Who we are
The doctoral student will work in the laboratory of Smita Saxena in the Department of Neurology, University hospital, University of Bern, Switzerland and will be closely supervised by the group leader. The newly established Center for Experimental Neurology in the Department of Neurology has state-of-the-art labs and equipment and fosters a highly vibrant scientific exchange between clinical and experimental research groups. The University of Bern hosts a number of leading research laboratories in diverse areas of life sciences and provides ample opportunities for collaborations, interactions and state of the art research facilities.

Applicant profile
The successful applicant should have a Master degree in biological sciences with an excellent track record, a background in neurosciences, a broad working knowledge of mouse genetics, basic techniques in molecular and cellular biology. Previous experience with imaging and image processing is an advantage. Experience in cerebellum or spinal cord research is a plus, but not necessary. The candidate is expected to work in a small team, design experiments and perform research. Good communication skills in English are required.
