Job ID

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Dr Graham Sheridan’s research group in the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham.

We are interested in attracting dynamic and enthusiastic scientists who can help to run a programme of research aimed at investigating how ageing and neurodegeneration impact the mechanosensitivity of neurons and glial cells. In particular, the successful candidate will study if age- or disease-related alterations to cellular mechanotransduction lead to changes in calcium homeostasis or electrophysiological properties of hippocampal neurons and glial cells.

The Research Associate will join a network of neuroscientists and bioengineers using innovative approaches to tackle major unmet challenges in dementia and neurodegenerative diseases.

The work will be carried out in Dr Graham Sheridan’s laboratory in the Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience division of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham.

Applicants should have a range of interdisciplinary skills. In particular, candidates with a proven track record in several of the following techniques are encouraged to apply:
- Electrophysiology (e.g. patch-clamp recordings)
- Live-cell calcium imaging in neurons or acute brain slices
- In vivo models of neuroinflammation/ neurodegeneration
- Computer programming skills, e.g. automated image analysis
- Culturing of primary neurons, glial cells, or organotypic brain slices
- iPSC models of neurodegenerative disease
- Proteomics
- Immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy

Funding is available for 2 years in the first instance.

Deadline for applications: 30th July 2019

Proposed start date: 19th August 2019
