The Institute of Cognitive Neurology at the University Medical School in Goettingen (Prof. Melanie Wilke, and the Decision and Awareness group at the German Primate Center (Dr. Igor Kagan, are seeking a doctoral student to investigate thalamo-cortical circuits supporting eye-hand coordination and spatial decision-making. Our research program involves a multi-modal approach that combines causal brain perturbation methods such as inactivation or microstimulation with imaging and electrophysiological recordings in behaving macaques performing visuomotor and decision tasks, and comparative studies in human patients. The project will include simultaneous electrophysiological recordings from multiple brain areas in monkeys and humans.
We offer a stimulating multidisciplinary scientific environment with state-of-the-art animal, imaging, electrophysiological and computational facilities. Students can choose among multiple neuroscience PhD programs of the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB).
We look for academic career-oriented candidates with a strong experimental background and quantitative skills, and a recent Master degree in a relevant field such as Neuroscience, Psychology or Physics. Prior experience with behavioral or electrophysiological techniques and a background in relevant analytical methods such as signal processing are a plus. Prior programming experience in MATLAB or Python is a must.
Applications should include a CV, a letter of intent including a statement of scientific/research experience and interests, and the names and contact information of two references, sent as a single PDF file to Melanie Wilke at, with a subject line “PhD thalamo-cortical interactions”.
Review of applications will begin December 1st, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled.
