Description

The German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE) is a member of the Leibniz Association. The institute’s mission is to conduct experimental and clinical research in the field of nutrition and health, with the aim of understanding the molecular basis of nutrition-dependent diseases, and of developing new strategies for treatment and prevention (www.dife.de).

We invite applications for the the newly founded Junior Research Group Neurocircuit Development and Function (NDF).

The successful candidate should be interested in aspects of neuronal circuitry underlying food intake regulation and emotional/sensory systems. The project will focus on deciphering the specific neuronal circuitry mediated by the melanocortin system to integrate internal homeostatic cues and external cues as to food availability, perception and motivation. Understanding the complex interplay of neuronal circuits mediating aspects of homeostasis and hedonic intake are crucial for furthering our knowledge of the central cues responsible for proper food intake, energy homeostasis and overall metabolic health. The details and skills of the PhD studies will include the following:

-Establishment of novel techniques and approaches with regard to neuronal circuit function and development
-Planning and running of metabolic and behavioral studies
-Using advanced imaging techniques (Confocal microscopy, light sheet fluorescent microscopy) for the visualization of brain circuitry.

Skills and Requirements:

-Excellent M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Neuroscience, Biology, Biochemistry, Human Nutrition
-Knowledge of standard biochemical and molecular biology methods (PCR, qPCR, Western Blot, Immunohistochemistry)
-Experience in animal experiments would be beneficial
-High degree of motivation and ability to work in an interactive research environment
-Excellent English (spoken and in writing) and data analysis and presentation abilities (MS Office, statistics)
