A 4-year PhD position is available at the Translational Neurology Group, Department of Clinical Sciences, Wallenberg Neurocentrum, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.
Topic: “Pericyte signalling in CNS disease”
Background: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption is a widely recognized common denominator of many neurodegenerative disorders. Integrity of the BBB is absolutely vital for normal neuronal function. Pericytes are cells that line the entire brain microvasculature. They have a key role in maintaining this homeostasis of the brain microenvironment and play a crucial role in brain pathology.

The purpose of this project is to characterize the role of pericytes in neurodegenerative processes. The candidate will systematically decode the specific molecular regulation of pericytes in order to develop future novel treatments modulating pericyte function in disease.

Techniques: In vitro studies, in vivo animal models and analysis of human material. The candidate will learn techniques such as advanced microscopic techniques, microsurgery, cell isolation techniques, flow cytometry, single cell RNA sequencing, PCR and bioinformatics.
The group has a translational research focus on neuroprotection and neurorestoration. Translational Neurology is a member of centres of excellence ( and the Wallenberg Centrum for Molecular Medicine ( The environment at Lund University provides excellent training with state-of –the art equipment, numerous guest lectures and workshops.
Candidates are eligible to apply if they have 240 high school points, a Master degree and preferably a very strong background in neurobiology and/or vascular biology.
An outstanding academic performance and prior research experience is expected. Knowledge in immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, and experience in animal handling and/or cell culture is an advantage.
Intended start: TBD
