Description

Work environment
The Storkebaum lab combines Drosophila and mouse genetics to unravel molecular mechanisms underlying motor neurodegenerative diseases. Our international team consists of 4 PhD students, 2 postdocs, 2 TAs, and several Master’s students. We attracted ~3 mio€ external funding and have several recent high-impact papers (see webpage).
Responsibilities
We are conducting a genetic screen to identify genes required for axonal maintenance. We screened ~20% of the Drosophila genome, and identified ~45 mutant lines that display axonal degeneration. Your PhD project will involve characterization of identified mutants, generation of additional mutants, whole genome sequencing and bio-informatic analysis to identify causative mutations, and putative disease-causing mutations in the human orthologous genes. You will have the opportunity to contribute to other projects and use a broad spectrum of methods incl. Drosophila genetics and behavioral analysis, fluorescence, confocal, and electron microscopy, Illumina NGS, IHC, molecular biology and biochemistry. You will supervise Master’s students.
What we expect from you:
You are highly motivated, enthusiastic, critical, creative and team-oriented.
You hold a Master’s degree (or are about to obtain one) in biology, biomedical sciences, biochemistry, genetics or a related discipline.
Previous experience with Drosophila genetics is a plus but not required.
Good English language skills.
You are capable of working in a team as well as independently.
What we have to offer:
employment: 1.0 FTE (40 h/week) for 4 years;
gross starting salary: €2,325/month; increases to €2,972 in year 4;
+ 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
membership of the Donders Graduate School;
excellent personal development opportunities in scientific and academic career skills.
Are you interested?
Please email a one-page motivation letter and CV, incl. study grades and 2 references, to Erik Storkebaum (e.storkebaum@donders.ru.nl).
