Description

Research Assistant (PhD Student) for the DFG project “Evolutionary specialization of neuronal core circuits in arthropod olfactory systems: structure and function of convergence/divergence in crustaceans versus insects”. The applicant will analyze the evolution of neuronal core circuits in the olfactory pathway of arthropods by using immunohistochemistry, neuronal staining, and imaging techniques (EM, CLSM). Within the multi-disciplinary project, these data will ultimately be integrated into a mathematical model of information processing in the olfactory system. The project is in collaboration with the AG Nawrot/Cologne, and the AG Harzsch/Greifswald in the DFG priority program PP 2205 „Evolutionary Optimization of Neuronal Processing“: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/mission/618330.html.

A highly motivated candidate with above-average qualifications, enthusiasm for and experience in research, and the willingness to play an active role in an interdisciplinary project should have:
- an excellent University degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in biology, zoology, neurobiology or a related topic.
- excellent knowledge of neuroanatomy (immunohistochemistry, CLSM, electron microscopy) preferably of arthropods.
- very good knowledge of data processing with 3D reconstruction software.
- very good command of written and spoken English for preparing scientific publications and presenting research results at international congresses

Submit your application including CV, motivation letter, 2 letters of recommendation and certificates to jrybak (at) ice.mpg.de. The MPI is an equal opportunity employer. We therefore encourage applicants, independent of nationality, gender or disability, to apply for this position. Payment will be based on the tariff contracts for public service (65% E13).
