PhD student position in Neuroscience offered by
RTG 2162 “Neurodevelopment and CNS vulnerability”
A PhD position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ruth Beckervordersandforth at the Institute of Biochemistry, FAU Erlangen.
Our laboratory is interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying plasticity of the mammalian brain, with a specific focus on astrocytes. We want to tackle the novel concept that morphologically and functionally distinct astrocyte subtypes modulate plasticity in the adult mammalian hippocampus by regulating the process of adult neurogenesis on several levels. The project will investigate whether the expression of the autism- and schizophrenia linked gene by astrocytes is involved in the regulation of functional integration of adult-generated neurons. This collaborative project combines the knowledge and techniques on neurogenesis, hippocampal astrocyte diversity and function with a functional readout for neuronal maturation by electrophysiology. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the research groups of Prof. Lie (Institute of Biochemistry) and Prof. Alzheimer (Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology). We are looking for a highly motivated student with a strong background in Neurobiology, Physiology or Developmental Biology.
The doctoral researcher will be part of the DFG-Research Training Group 2162 which offers a structured, international PhD program in basic and translational neurobiology.
