Research Interests

My lab is aiming to build mechanistic models that distil and re-articulate our current knowledge of how nervous systems compute. We're interested in 3 main areas:

Plasticity

We aim to find the rules that govern how updates in synaptic connectivity in order to learn and adapt in a changing world. We investigate how plasticity differs across cell types, how learning is guided by neuromodulation, and how changes in synaptic connections affect network dynamics.

Network dynamics and computation

We seek to understand how neural networks process sensory inputs, store and manipulate memories, and send motor outputs. We study the role of excitatory-inhibitory balance in processing and gating the flow of information.

Ion channels and single-neuron biophysics

We build detailed biophysical models of single neurons in order to understand the complex input-output

relationships at the level of dendritic integration. We maintain a database of ion channel models, http:/icg.neurotheory.ox.ac.uk
