The serotonin transporter as a G protein-coupled transporter: in vitro and in vivo evidence for coupling of serotonin transport and the G protein cycle

The laboratory of Dr. Jana Haase is seeking to recruit a PhD student to study a novel regulatory mechanism of the serotonin transporter (SERT). Our recent data suggest that SERT interacts with heterotrimeric G proteins in much the same way as G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). The aim of this project is to study in detail the G protein-SERT interaction and its consequences for SERT function, serotonin signalling, and the mechanism of action of antidepressants and psychostimulants. The results of the project are also expected to generate novel insight into molecular mechanisms underlying disease-associated SERT variants. The project will provide the candidate with state-of-the-art training in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, pharmacology and non-mammalian animal models (C. elegans) as well as networking opportunities through local and international collaborations.
