2 Postdoctoral researcher positions available at the Bioengineering Institute of the University Miguel Hernández, Elche, Spain, in the framework of the Project “Development of an Advanced Cortical Visual Neuroprosthesis for the Blind” (CORTIVIS).
Visual impairment is one of the ten most prevalent disabilities and poses extraordinary challenges to individuals in our society, which is heavily dependent on sight. Approximately 314 million people in the world are visually impaired, with approximately 30 million blind or partially sighted individuals in Europe alone, a number that is expected to increase in the next few years. Thus, in the coming years, society will be faced with an increasing number of elderly adults with visual problems that cannot be effectively treated (around 50% of visual impairment remains untreatable). Cortical neuroprostheses are a promising approach for these patients, but there are still many unresolved issues delaying their development.
The CORTIVIS project aims to create breakthrough technology for a functional, long-life, bi-directional (stimulation and recording) high-channel count brain implant based on intracortical microelectrodes that could help many of these blind people (J. Clin. Invest. 2021; 131(23):e151331). Postdoctoral researchers will be involved in the development of innovative approaches for presenting complex visual information through high-electrode-count microelectrode arrays, in the design of novel stimulation algorithms for augmenting functional vision, in the development of an advanced bioinspired visual encoder optimized for cortical visual neuroprostheses, and in the creation of adaptive machine learning algorithms for a new brain-computer interface technology. Furthermore, they will collaborate actively in human experiments in the framework of a clinical trial designed to study the electrical parameters needed for eliciting visual perceptions through electrical stimulation of the human cortex using intracortical microelectrodes in blind volunteers (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02983370).
Applicants have to be able to write reports and scientific papers and communicate research results at international conferences. Candidates must have a solid publication record, be highly motivated, and be able to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment. A strong background in at least one of the following areas is preferred: visual prostheses, neurophysiology, neurobiology, computational neuroscience, neuroengineering, brain-computer interfaces, or artificial intelligence techniques. Experience in neuroprostheses, clinical trials, deep learning techniques, and programming skills will be advantageous.
