Our Department is hiring an Associate Professor in Biomolecular Science (Permanent) with expertise in neuroscience, pharmacology, aging, inflammation, and chronic diseases biomarkers.

Essential Criteria:

  • Primary degree (level 8 NFQ) in biological sciences or a closely related area.
  • Doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in cellular/molecular pharmacology, cell biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or closely related disciplines.
  • Minimum of 3 years (or equivalent) relevant experience post PhD.
  • Track record of publishing in relevant peer-reviewed top-tier journals and in books by prestigious publisher’s post PhD, in one or more of the following areas:
  • Pharmacological applications; drug development; drug delivery.
  • Bioinformatics; Computational biology
  • Chronic diseases biomarkers.
  • Aging and inflammation markers.
  • Neuroscience: Mechanistic approaches to human diseases.
  • Experience in the preparation of research proposals to obtain competitive/prestigious funding from applied or basic external funding sources.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to the overall intellectual life and administrative roles of the University, the academic discipline, and society.
  • Evidence of teaching at third-level institutions in cellular/molecular pharmacology, cell biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or closely related disciplines (through lectures, laboratory classes, and tutorials).
  • Skills in a range of innovative laboratory or bioinformatic techniques in bioscience or pharmacology.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Evidence of roles of responsibility directing independent research projects and an established track record in generating external research income.
  • Qualification in teaching to third level students.
  • Evidence of academic course/module material development and delivery in a third level setting, preferably to students of bioscience or biomolecular science.
  • Successful track record in the supervision of Final Year Projects (i.e., BSc), MSc, and/or PhD candidates.
  • Experience with online teaching of bioscience.
  • Experience in the use of drug delivery, drug design and development tools, and bioinformatic and computational biology approaches, including working knowledge of data analysis using R script, Python, and MathLab.
  • Experience in performing administrative tasks and contributing to periodic departmental and programme reviews and reports.
  • Evidence of international collaboration projects and/or publications.

  • A research plan (up to two pages in length) describing the research that the candidate would envisage undertaking if offered the position at the University of Limerick.


These plans should include how the applicant would propose to advance programme offerings and research activities in the area of bioscience and biopharmaceutical science.
