Research Fellow in Neuroimmunology

Position: Post-doctoral Position

Deadline: 25 October 2021

Contract Length: 1 year, with possible extension for an additional year

City: Southampton

Country: United Kingdom

Institution: University of Southampton

Department: School of Biological Sciences

Description:

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to join Gomez-Nicola’s team (www.dgnlab.co.uk) to study the crosstalk of inflammation and depression using animal models that mimic depression-like behaviour.  Experience in areas related to neuroscience and/or immunology is essential.

The post is available for an initial period of 12 months but with likelihood of further funding for an additional year, pending the research meeting its milestones. The post is offered on a full-time or part-time basis.

You will have a PhD* and laboratory experience in a relevant area, with a strong neuroscience or immunology component. Having previous experience with in vivo work is essential. We are looking for an enthusiastic and well-motivated scientist, capable of contributing substantially to developing its own research project. You will be a good team-worker, happy to contribute and help fellow scientists, as well as to make an impact in the understanding and treatment of mental health disorders.

The project is a new collaboration with an industrial partner and offers exciting routes into a deep understanding of the role of the immune system in mental health. This post offers an opportunity to gain experience of diverse techniques working in the lab of Dr Gomez-Nicola, and will be supported by the broader research team, in a vibrant and stimulating multi-disciplinary environment.

The University of Southampton provides an outstanding environment for research on neuroscience. The research group is part of the Alzheimer’s Research UK South Coast Network and the Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG), and is integrated across the disciplines of biology and medicine including laboratories with clinical and non-clinical expertise.

Informal inquires can be made to Dr Gomez-Nicola (d.gomez-nicola@soton.ac.uk).

The University of Southampton holds an Athena Swan Silver Award, demonstrating their commitment to provide equal opportunities and to advance the representation of women in STEM/M subjects: science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.  Biological Sciences is able to provide flexible working opportunities in a part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break.

The University has a generous maternity policy, onsite childcare facilities and employees are able to participate in the childcare vouchers scheme. Other benefits include state-of-the-art on-campus sports, arts and culture facilities, a full programme of events and a range of staff discounts.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
