Investigating the molecular pathomechanisms in myelinating oligodendroglia relevant for neurodevelopmental disorders

Position: Ph.D. Student

Deadline: 10 December 2021

Employment Start Date: 1 July 2022

Contract Length: 3 years

City: Erlangen

Country: Germany

Institution: Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

Department: Institute of Biochemistry

A PhD position is available in the laboratory of Prof. Michael Wegner at the Institute of Biochemistry FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Our laboratory studies the regulatory mechanisms controlling the generation of myelinating glial cells in health and disease using transgenic mouse models and human stem cell-based model systems. For this project we are seeking a highly motivated student who is interested to investigate the molecular pathomechanisms in myelinating oligodendroglia that are relevant for and contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders. In particular, we focus on genes that impact transcriptional and epigenetic processes. State-of-the-art techniques in molecular and developmental biology as well as genetics, biochemistry and “Omics”-approaches will be used.

The doctoral student will be integrated into the DFG-funded Research Training Group 2162 (GRK2162) “Neurodevelopment and CNS Vulnerability”. The GRK2162 offers:

  • a 3-year structured PhD program with interdisciplinary thesis research,
  • a vibrant, collaborative scientific environment,
  • supervision and mentorship by a team of internationally renowned experts,
  • State-of-the-art research facilities and
  • advanced training opportunities (scientific, skills, career) in English.

Who we look for:

We are looking for a enthusiastic and knowledge-driven student with a Diploma/Master degree in Molecular Medicine, Biology or related fields. Candidates should have a strong background in Neurobiology or Developmental Biology.
