A 4-5 years-long  postdoctoral position is available within the “Neuromodulation of Cortical and Subcortical Circuits” Research Line at IIT, Genoa.

The lab applies a multiscale neuroscience approach to investigate the cellular mechanisms and fundamental principles of synaptic neuromodulation, and to resolve the spatiotemporal dynamic of behaviorally relevant neuromodulatory signals at circuit- and system level resolution.

The successful applicant will be developing a multidisciplinary research project to understand how midbrain and basal ganglia circuits respond to neuromodulators that convey internal-state (positive or negative valence) related signals to motor control regions (striatum), both in health and disease state (psychomotor and affective disorders).

To this purpose, the candidate will apply neurophysiological, optogenetic and chemogenetic approaches (ex vivo and in vivo) to study how noradrenaline, serotonin- and endocannabinoid signals interact to modulate the activity of neurons as well as the strength and plasticity of their synapses. These studies will be implemented by using state-of-the art imaging techniques (miniscope imaging and fiber photometry) to monitor neuromodulators during behavioral paradigms.

Knowledge of neurophysiology and optogenetics, combined with viral-based approaches to deconstruct and manipulate neuronal circuits ex-vivo or in-vivo is preferred. Previous experience with large-scale neuronal imaging in-vivo and programming (Python or MATLAB), together with signal processing expertise appropriate for the analysis of neuronal activity, will be a plus.
