A PhD position in neuroscience is available for 4 years and the PhD student will be co-supervised by Dr. Afsaneh Gaillard and Dr. Luis Pereira de Almeida. The research project will focus on spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, also known as Machado-Joseph disease, which is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by an abnormal expansion of the CAG (glutamine-encoding) triplet in the ATXN3 gene. The disorder manifests itself in adulthood and involves neurodegeneration in several brain regions. The available treatments only ameliorate symptomatology and do not block disease progression. Caloric restriction (CR) is a natural dietary therapy known to date to slow the onset of certain brain pathologies. The development of restriction mimetics is currently in full swing. Resveratrol, a compound belonging to the polyphenol group, has interesting therapeutic properties and is a promising candidate as a mimetic of the effects of CR. We propose to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Resveratrol in the transgenic mouse model of MJD. We are particularly interested in the modes of administration of Resveratrol and the signaling pathways activated by the treatment. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, team-player, knowledge-driven student with a Master’s degree in neuroscience, with strong verbal and written communication skills (English is required).
