Employment Start Date: 1 September 2023

Contract Length: 2 years

City: Umeå

Country: Sweden

Institution: Umeå University

Department: Integrative Medical Biology

Description:

The Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB) at Umeå University announces a postdoctoral scholarship in cognitive neuroscience of aging with focus on structural and functional connectome. IMB offers an active and creative research and educational environment for both employees and students.

More information about the department can be found on our website Department of Integrative Medical Biology, https://www.umu.se/en/department-of-integrative-medical-biology/.

The current position is in Alireza Salami’s research group at the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM; https://www.umu.se/en/wallenberg-centre-for-molecular-medicine/). WCMM conducts research in various research arena including cancer, infectious diseases, and nervous system disease.

Description of the project

The project investigates neural and molecular basis of cognitive decline in aging using longitudinal data. Furthermore, we aim to assay longitudinal changes in structural-functional correspondence across the brain, to test the contribution of dopaminergic alterations to changes in structural-functional correspondence and to examin associations with cognitive decline in aging. This project will use a unique longitudinal dataset from the DyNAMiC project with extensive MRI, PET, and cognitive test battery (http://www.alirezasalamilab.com/project1.html).

The incumbent is expected to contribute to all aspects of research, including analysis of brain imaging data, interpretation, and publication of results. The applicant should be able to integrate both independently and as part of the research group.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with hands on experience with the latest MRI techniques for studying brain connectome.

The applicant is required to:

  • Have a PhD degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or another area closely related to the current project. Priority will be given to applicants who graduated within three years before the application deadline or will be graduate not later than September 1st, 2023.
  • Have experience in neuroimaging, particularly functional and structural connectivity.  The applicant with documentation of such an experience via a published paper(s) will be given priority.
  • Is capable in statistics and communication in written and spoken scientific English.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s suitability for the current project and ability to collaborate.

Application and conditions

The scholarship is valid for 2 years with funds through the Kempe Foundation. Starting August/September 2023, or as otherwise agreed.
