Description:

The Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and the Max Planck Society invite applications for a

Max Planck Research Group in Neuroscience
at the MPI for Brain Research

The Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt am Main (www.brain.mpg.de) is a vibrant and international research institution with a focus on understanding the organization and functions of the neuron and neuronal circuits.

The institute is located in a modern building with spacious, state-of-the-art labs for experimental and theoretical research. The institute’s research includes three scientific departments (Directors: Erin Schuman, Gilles Laurent, Moritz Helmstaedter) and three Max Planck Research Groups (Vanessa Stempel, Alison Barker, Hiroshi Ito). Research at the institute focuses on neural circuit function (mechanistic to computational), at scales ranging from molecules to circuits, aimed at explaining how individual neurons and circuits function and give rise to computation, perception, learning and memory, sleep and behavior. Approaches are generally cross-disciplinary (e.g., genetic, molecular, electrophysiological, imaging, computational). Our investigators are part of the interdisciplinary neuroscience network in Frankfurt, including Goethe University, Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, the Ernst Struengmann Institute and the Frankfurt Institute of Advanced Studies. Research at the institute is supported by four scientific core facilities (imaging, proteomics, scientific computing, and scientific data visualization and analysis), a central animal facility and general services. A childcare facility with reserved slots for institute members is located on the Campus.

We wish to recruit a new Max Planck research group leader in 2024. We encourage applications from interested scientists who want to build their own independent research program within an international, exciting, interactive, and supportive research environment. Selected candidates will be offered a Max Planck Research Group for a period of six years with the possibility of extension (three years). Funding includes the group leader position (equivalent to an assistant professorship) as well as additional research positions, budget, and start-up packages. Detailed information is available at https://www.mpg.de/career/max-planck-research-groups.

Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a one-page summary of scientific achievements, and a two-page research plan. Applicants need to arrange for two (or more) letters of recommendation to be submitted directly by the referees to mprgl-applications@brain.mpg.de. We encourage applications from female scientists and underrepresented minorities. Successful candidates will be invited to a symposium on April 30, 2024, for final selection.

The Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science is an independent, non-profit research organization that primarily promotes and supports basic research. The society currently operates 85 institutes and research facilities with more than 23,900 employees, including 6,900 scientists. The Max Planck Society, an equal opportunity employer, is committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of recruiting and employment.

Please send your application in a single PDF file (CV-publications-achievements-plan), no later than January 15, 2024, to mprgl-applications@brain.mpg.de. Please arrange for the letters of recommendation to be sent to the same e-mail address.
