- Spatial navigation in goldfish
- Visual processing in archerfish
Project 1 explores the neural basis of navigation. Navigation is closely related to memory and learning. The question of how animals find their way in space is a scientific gold mine for understanding these brain functions. We utilize the goldfish to reveal how these important brain functions are achieved in the underwater world.
Project 2 explores vision guided behavior in the archerfish and how the visual system processes information to guide behavior. The archerfish is a special animal which hunts insects above the water level by spitting a jet of water at the insect to bring it to the water. This special hunting behavior opens a window on the study of the visual system.
The successful candidate has a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, physics, computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics or any other related discipline. The candidate should have a strong interest in information processing in the brain.
Full tuition and scholarship are provided.
The lab team is multidisciplinary and has a strong background in electrophysiology. We also use computational modeling and perform behavioral experiments.
