Employment Start Date: 1 May 2024

Description:

Position: PhD student (TVL-E13 50% or equivalent)

Deadline for application: 31st March 2024

Duration: 3 years with possibility of extension

Location: Essen, Germany

The PhD position is available in the Research group “Neuron-glia interactions and extracellular matrix post-stroke” at the Neurology Department of University Hospital Essen. We previously demonstrated that the remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) by microglia and astrocytes plays a critical role in post-stroke neuroplasticity and recovery, representing a promising yet underexplored target for stroke therapies. Now, we are developing innovative translational treatments that promote brain plasticity and recovery after stroke by modulating ECM remodeling and ECM-glia interactions.

The new colleague will benefit from a highly collaborative international environment, cutting-edge equipment, local tuition programs, and ample networking possibilities. We are looking for a highly motivated person who is dedicated to performing groundbreaking research in the field of neuron-glial interactions. The successful applicant should have the following competences:

  • Strong interest in neuron-glia interactions, brain ECM, and stroke recovery;
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Neuroscience/Biomedicine/Biophysics or related field;
  • Fluent in English written and spoken;
  • Experience in IHC/ICC and fluorescent microscopy;
  • Experience in cell culture, preferably hiPSC models;
  • Knowledge and experience in electrophysiology methods is desirable;
  • Knowledge and experience in live-cell imaging or superresolution microscopy is desirable;

Applications will be continuously reviewed and considered until the position is successfully filled. Motivation letters describing your background in research interests, CV, and contacts of two potential referees should be submitted by email to:
