PhD position in cortical-subcortical sensory processing using immunohistochemistry & fluorescence in situ hybridisation in rodent brain at the Department of Neurophysiology Medical Faculty, Ruhr University Bochum

Position: Ph.D. Student

Deadline: 8 April 2024

Contract Length: 3 years minimum

City: Bochum

Country: Germany

Institution: Ruhr University Bochum, Medical Faculty

Department: Neurophysiology

Description:

The Department of Neurophysiology at the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum, hosts a vibrant and talented team of neuroscientists from a variety of scientific backgrounds that implement multidisciplinary approaches to understanding the mechanisms underlying memory. A PhD position is currently available for a candidate that has a strong interest in, and ideally, prior training in the area of immunohistochemistry and/or fluorescence in situ hybridisation in the rodent brain. The PhD project will focus on the interaction of corticofugal systems in the enabling of sensory perception, particularly focussing on somatosensory information processing. For this, animal behavior will be studied using optogenetics and brain analysis will be conducted using immunohistochemistry (IHC)  and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH).

The position is available from May 2024, will be funded for 3 years, with  further extensions possible. Admission to the International Graduate School of Neuroscience (www.rub.de/igsn) will be expected.

Your skill set: experimental training in either IHC, or FISH, in rodent brain,  FELASA-C certificate, familiarity with working with behaving rodents, very good communication skills, fluency in English, ability to work with a team, goal-orientation, strong theoretical knowledge of neurophysiology and/or systems neuroscience. Grade 1.7 or equivalent in a Master’s degree in neuroscience or a related experimental discipline. (See: www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/igsn/admission/requirements.html)

Experience with respective signal analysis is advantageous Applications (including motivation letter, CV, proof of degrees, publication list, grade transcripts, 2 referees) should be directed to Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Denise Manahan-Vaughan (LMR@rub.de).
