PhD (f/m/x) position on Memory and Spatial Coding in Superagers

Code: 4066/2024/9

The Aging, Cognition & Technology group, led by Prof. Thomas Wolbers at the DZNE Magdeburg, invites applications for a 4-year PhD position. In a unique project, we will investigate mechanisms of superior memory and spatial coding in a large cohort of Superagers – older adults with exceptional memory abilities.

Your role in detail

As a successful candidate, you will engage in a comprehensive investigation of the neural and cognitive processes underlying superior memory in aging. This research will involve:

  • Designing and implementing behavioral experiments using advanced virtual reality (VR) technologies
  • Conducting neuroimaging experiments using molecular imaging techniques and ultra-high field MRI (7T)
  • Applying computational models to analyze data and generate predictive insights

This project is positioned at the intersection of aging research, advanced neuroimaging and computational neuroscience, offering you the opportunity to contribute to an area of high societal relevance.

Research Environment

  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: You will have access to cutting-edge neuroscience resources, including 3T and 7T MRI scanners, a 3T MR-PET scanner, and extensive EEG, MEG, TMS, and eye-tracking systems. Additionally, the lab houses two immersive VR labs and maintains strong international collaborations.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The project is embedded within the Neural Resources of Cognition Collaborative Research Center, providing ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration with leading experts in the field.
  • Mentorship and Development: You will work under the direct supervision of Prof. Wolbers and Dr. Vladislava Segen, and you will have opportunities for professional growth through tailored training programs and regular mentorship.

Your qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging methods, applied statistics, or a related field (candidates nearing the completion of their degree are welcome to apply).
  • Strong statistical and analytical skills, with a clear interest in cognitive aging and spatial cognition.
  • Competence in or a willingness to learn computer programming (e.g., Python, R, Matlab).
  • Proficiency in English, with strong written and oral communication skills.

You should be thorough, efficient, and capable of working independently while also contributing to a collaborative research environment.

What our employees value

  • A fully funded 4-year PhD position in a friendly, international and highly dynamic team
  • Strong Collaborative Network: You will be integrated into a network of international collaborators, enhancing both research and career opportunities.
  • Funds for attending international conferences
  • Professional Development: Opportunities for training and career development tailored to your interests, including participation in the Magdeburg International Neuroscience Graduate Program
  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible working hours, 30 days of annual leave, and a subsidized ticket for public transport across Germany
  • Health and Well-being: Access to a comprehensive range of company health programs
  • Regular team events

You will obtain special skills and knowledge for your scientific qualification during your activities at DZNE. The DZNE is an equal opportunity employer. It especially welcomes and encourages disabled individuals to apply.
