ERC-funded PhD Positions in Experimental Neuroscience – 2025

Position: Ph.D. Student

Deadline: 31 December 2024

Employment Start Date: 1 November 2025

Contract Length: 4 years

City: Rovereto

Country: Italy

Institution: Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia

Department: Functional Neuroimaging laboratory

Description:

The Gozzi laboratory, at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (www.iit.it) in Rovereto (Italy), invites applications for two PhD scholarship as part of the newly-funded ERC project BRAINAMICS.

Research at the Gozzi lab is aimed at understanding how the brain works as an integrated network in health and disease. The Gozzi lab addresses these questions by combining causal neural manipulations in rodents with functional neuroimaging methods (fMRI, fUS), multimodal recordings, and cutting-edge neuro-computational approaches.

The themes we’re exploring cover experimental and computational neuroscience.

** Experimental Neuroscience **
1️⃣ Use of perturbational approaches to explore the neural mechanisms of fMRI dysconnectivity

2️⃣ Implementation of large-scale electrophysiology to investigate how synthetic brain rhythms propagate at the macroscale
3️⃣ Multimodal recordings of neurotransmitter activity and fMRI connectivity in the mouse brain

(Please note: themes 1️⃣, 2️⃣ and 3️⃣ will require experimental work in rodents)

** Computational Neuroscience **
4️⃣ Implementation of whole-brain in silico models of functional connectivity in the rodent brain

The studentships will be part of the international doctoral school in cognitive and brain sciences, in partnership with the University of Trento (http://web.unitn.it/en/cimec/). Final admission to the doctoral school will entail a competitive selection process, as per the doctoral school regulations.Expressions of interest should include a detailed CV, a brief statement of research interests, contact details for two referees, and a copy of the master’s thesis (if available). Please specify the thematic area of interest and send all materials to alessandro.gozzi@iit.it.
