Job ID: 123402
Postdoctoral researcher: Neuronal Dynamics underlying Auditory Perception.
Position: Post-doctoral Position
Deadline: 1 August 2025
Employment Start Date: 1 October 2025
Contract Length: 2 years
City: Mainz
Country: Germany
Institution: University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Department: Institute for Physiology
Description:
The Rumpel Lab (here) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher interested in the Neuronal Dynamics underlying Auditory Perception.
In recent years, we have used large-scale in vivo two-photon calcium imaging in the mouse auditory cortex to estimate the structure of neuronal population activity in the form of representational maps (e.g., Aschauer et al., 2022, Cell Reports; Noda et al., 2025, Nat. Neurosci.). Interestingly, these maps allow for the prediction of perceptual stimulus generalization measured in behavioral discrimination tasks.
Current questions in the lab are focused on a mechanistic understanding how representational maps emerge from the collective tuning of neurons and how they are linked to higher-order cognitive phenomena like boredom or creativity.
The position comes with a competitive salary (100% E13) for two years and a teaching assignment in physiology (4 SWS) in German.
Excellent command of German (teaching) and English (lab language) is required.
The position is available from 1st October 2025.
Applicants should hold a Master’s Degree and a PhD in neuroscience, physics or a related field, possess excellent communication skills, and demonstrate a strong interest in working in a collaborative and international environment.
Experience in mouse behavioral experiments and analysis, in vivo imaging, histology and data analysis is preferred.
Alternatively, candidates with in-depth experience in computational approaches, programming, and data analysis will find this position an excellent opportunity to work at the interface of experimental and theoretical neuroscience.
