A Workshop in Neuroscience and Cognition at our School
Barcelona, ES
Attendance type(s): In Person
Event Dates: 12—22 Mar 2018
The project ‘A Workshop of Neuroscience and Cognition at our School’ aims to create an integrated experience for Vocational Education students where they can approach to the latest advances in research in the field, and at the same time become aware of how their brain works in the process of learning. By completing or modifying the beliefs that students have about how they learn, the goal is to directly impact their learning process. As well, the workshop also seeks the participation of the teachers of the school with the same objective.
The project is aimed mainly at the students of Vocational Education of Clinical and Biomedical Laboratory of the school, although it is open to other specialties and teachers. The Workshop has structured several activities throughout the days between March 13 and March 22, mainly covering the Brain Awareness Week of 2018. Among the proposed activities, there are four talks by top researchers in their field, which we detail below, and two activities where students can participate actively in the Workshop.
The researchers and topics that will take part in the Workshop are:
1. Brain areas and neurotransmitters involved in cognition: by Dr. Vicky Puig, principal investigator of the Neuromodulation of Neural Networks Circuits Group of the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research (IMIM, PRBB), Barcelona.
2. Ethics of Neuroscience: experiments in animals and humans? by Dr. Ignasi Sahún, researcher in learning neuroscience, former head of Neurobehavioral Phenotyping Unit at Barcelona Scientific Park (PCB) and founder of ZeClinics, in Barcelona.
3. Virtual Reality as a cognitive therapy, by Solène Neyret, EventLab at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS, University of Barcelona).
4. Introduction to Neuroeducation, by Prof. David Bueno, from the Department of Genetics of the Faculty of Biology, University of Barcelona.
The two active activities included in the Workshop are:
i. A poster session, where students will present a research article in neuroscience and learning of their interest. A prize will be awarded to the best oral presentation that will be assessed by the school teachers.
ii. An innovative role-play activity based on the PlayDecide platform, which will work on the ethical aspects of Neuroenhancement with students. We will have the support of the Center for Science, Society and Education Studies at the Pompeu Fabra University.
The Workshop is part of the NeurAula project, which combines the activity of BAW with a Neuroeducation program for students. The NeurAula program, including the impact of the Workshop on students, will be assessed through an educational research we have designed in collaboration with the Educational Research Group in Health Sciences, at Pompeu Fabra University.
