The seminar will focus on Germany’s important contribution to neuroscience in the 19th and 20th centuries. Particular emphasis will be placed on the emergence of neurophysiology and biophysics, and on how exchanges between scientists from Germany and the rest of Europe contributed to progress in these fields. These at times unlikely exchanges had an impact not only on scientific research but also on other disciplines, such as the influence of Herman von Helmholtz on the eminent French writer, Marcel Proust.

The seminar will be followed by a standing buffet and tour of the museum.
