Role and mission

The Committee on Animals in Research (CARE) was established to advise FENS on the responsible use of animals in neuroscience research.

CARE’s tasks reflect the overall policy of FENS in supporting the appropriate and responsible use of animals in neuroscience research by:

How FENS supports responsible animal research

  • Supporting the development of resources on animals in research
  • Promoting public education in matters related to the use of animals in neuroscience
  • Providing expert advice and supporting the implementation of the European Directive on the use of animals in scientific research
  • Contributing to international discussions and highlighting the importance of transparency in scientific research

CARE works very closely with the FENS member societies and its partners in order to fulfill its mission.

Promoting the responsible use of animals in research

Through CARE, FENS promotes the responsible use of animals in neuroscience in different ways.

Training and support

- supports openness workshops for researchers working with animals

- offers training grants to animal research support staff

- provides support to researchers facing challenges to their work

- responds to media when research is questioned

Education and Outreach

- coordinates FENS discussions about the use of animals in science

- promotes public education on the uses and benefits of scientific research, including research using animals

Monitoring and Advice

- monitors the development of EU legislation

- contributes to EU-level discussions

- provides expert advice
