Brain Prize Lecture “ Brainstem circuits for locomotion in the healthy and diseased brain”

This lecture will focus on recent advances that have elucidated the functional organisation of brainstem motor circuits in mammals needed to perform these roles. It will show that designated command pathways in the brainstem control the episodic expression of locomotion and that directionality of locomotion is controlled by activity in discrete brainstem circuits. The lecture will also show how these brainstem circuits are linked to higher brain centres and how locomotor disturbances following e.g. basal ganglia disorders affect these circuits and may be alleviated by targeted manipulation brainstem command pathways.

Ole Kiehn, Professor MD, Dr Sci – Department of Neuroscience, University of Copenhagen, Denmark and Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. Kiehn has been appointed FENS President Elect 2024-2026.

Founded by Lundbeck Foundation.

Time: 17:30 - 18:30 GMT, 18:30 - 19:30 CEST

Neuroscience communication: what, how and why?

Science is not finished until it is communicated
Talking about your research to the general public can seem less exciting than discussing findings  with your peers, but sharing knowledge is of utmost importance, as well as informing the public about the benefits and implications of recent discoveries.

Join this special event to discover the power of science communication and learn how to identify your audience, choose the best communication strategies for your audience, how to develop collaborations across sectors and open the door to unexpected opportunities.

Time: 13:45 - 16:30 GMT, 14:45 - 17:30 CEST

From Molecules to Memories: exploiting a multiplicity of approaches to achieve a holistic understanding of brain functions within the FENS-Kavli Network of Excellence

The establishment of a cooperative network composed of individuals with different backgrounds and expertise has been key to the success of daring enterprises like the Space Race or the discovery of elementary particles and basic building blocks of matter.

In this symposium, the speakers will explore a cross-section of the diversity of approaches by which FKNE scholars intend to deepen our understanding of brain functions, from development to ageing, from molecules to networks, all the way up until humans.
